Dr Robert Field gained a BSc in Chemistry from the University of Bristol in 1997. Robert stayed on at Bristol as a post graduate researcher, studying novel routes to chiral phosphines for use in catalysis, and gained a PhD in organic chemistry in 2001. On leaving Bristol, he took up the position of Applications Scientist and Customer Care Manager at Applied Photophysics, a company that specialises in the manufacture of spectroscopy equipment to research laboratories. Following that, in 2005, he moved to Veeco Instruments as a Sales Engineer, was later promoted to UK Sales Manager, and was responsible for the company's line of metrology equipment.
